You don't need scale, you need clarity

Clairity is an American singer-songwriter based out of Nashville, Tennessee. Her hits include “Sharks in the Swimming Pool”, “Exorcism”, and “DNA”. You don’t need scale, you just need her in your life. (Fun fact: she’s also friends with Ke$ha)

Now, back to our regularly scheduled programming.

On a more serious note, one mistake that I see a *lot* of people make is that of scale. Always looking for more, more more.

More views.
More posts.
More staff.
More customers.
More stress.
More chances to get completely and irrevocably fucked.

Hell, I’ve made the same mistake myself - sometimes I even need to catch myself, especially when setting up new campaigns.

On the outside, scale *looks* nice. It’s full of all sorts of fancy ideas: If you have more people, you get more work done. If you have more views, you get more customers. If you make more posts, you get more love. If you have more stress - well that’s a good thing, because it means you’re “hustling”. (Right?)

Guys…

No. Just… No.

Remember, I’ve had 3 locations with a *ton* of workers. (50+ on the list?) Operating at “scale” looked nice on paper, but in reality it totally sucked. I barely slept, I got woken up at 5 am to fix BS problems, and to be perfectly honest - I only did it because I didn’t know any better.

If I knew then what I know NOW, I would *never* try to operate at scale again.

I’ll make a hell of a statement right now, and tell you that you - entirely on your own - *can* earn $100K+ / month. (Keep in mind I’ve officially shut down my consulting practice now - I say this only to help you, not as any form of marketing.)

That ONLY happens when you get rid of scale, dial in your fundamentals and dial them up to 11.

This week, I was given a great reminder of that, in the form of sponsorship slot sales.

Depending on when you read this, I may be jumping out of a plane hurtling towards the ground. Depending on how that goes, I maaaaay already be in the hospital (haha).

It’s part of my latest project, which is a travel TV show named The Odyssey, where I showcase extraordinary & adventurous things throughout the world. We’re wrapping up filming for the pilot episode today (assuming everything goes well with this skydiving feature), and soon enough you’ll get to see it for yourself.

The sponsorship slots go for anywhere from 50 ~ 100K+ (Depending on future ad space too), and one of the most surprising things to me has been how easy it is to get ahold of the right people.

Where everyone else is sending 10,000 automated messages to “everyone with a pulse”, I’m laser focused on exactly the people who’d be interested in this kind of thing. I don’t reach everyone, but generally speaking when I leave a voicemail people call me back. When I hit the gatekeepers I get put through pretty much instantly.

I can’t speak for you, but I can speak for me. I called about 100 flight schools, hotels & spas last week, and had something in the realm of 5 impromptu meetings about the sponsorship slots. Also nabbed a restaurant feature - check that out in the pilot (It’s a great place too - fantastic food!).

That worked because I just ignored every idea about scale, picked up the phone and called. I knew who I needed to talk to, I knew what I had to offer, I knew my numbers, I knew what it would do for them, I had an answer for every conceivable thing that I could.

The same thing applies to you.

Instead of trying to scale up, try scaling back.

Ask yourself how you can accomplish the most, with the least amount of work. Ask yourself how you can increase the value of your services by 10x, rather than thinking it “needs” to be stuck @ X.

“The people operating at scale are literally playing a different ballgame. You just don't realize how different it is until it's too late.” ~ Synclair
